Last week, the Japanese imperial family gathered in Tokyo to celebrate the Emperor’s birthday, with plenty of classic brooches, earrings, and pearls worn for the occasion.

I previously covered the gorgeous tiaras worn by the Japanese imperial family to welcome the new year, but the empresses and princesses also wore some lovely brooches to greet the public at the start of 2026. Here’s a closer look at the jewels worn for the traditional balcony appearances on the second day of the year.

Denmark isn’t the only country where tiaras traditionally sparkle to ring in the new year. Last week, the Emperor and Empress of Japan hosted New Year receptions at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, with an astonishing range of imperial tiaras on display.
