The Grimaldis were out in Monaco this weekend for the annual Rose Ball, with jewels sparkling on four Monegasque ladies—and an imperial guest from Japan.

The Salle des Étoiles of Sporting Monte-Carlo was transformed into an other-worldly space for this year’s Bal de Rose, which was galaxy themed. The annual event is a benefit for the Princess Grace Foundation, with Princess Caroline acting as artistic director.

Princess Caroline always taps a friend from the world of fashion to help her dream up the atmosphere for the ball, and this year, as in several years past, the designer Christian Louboutin has been her collaborator. Louboutin, wearing a very on-theme pair of silver sparkly shoes, is pictured here with Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene.

There was an additional special guest on hand at this year’s gala: Princess Akiko of Mikasa, who is a working member of the Japanese imperial family. Akiko is a cousin of Emperor Naruhito and a great-granddaughter of Emperor Yoshihito. She wore a lovely evening gown with a peach-colored bodice, a green belt, and a skirt printed with lovely spring flowers, plus pearl earrings, a pearl necklace, and a floral brooch made of gold and pearls.

Princess Akiko is the head of her own branch of the imperial family, and she often travels abroad on behalf of the Emperor. She was in Monaco this weekend for the launch of “Japan in Monaco,” celebrating twenty years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene were also joined by his sister, Princess Caroline, and two of her children and their spouses/partners, Pierre and Beatrice Casiraghi and Princess Alexandra of Hanover and Ben-Sylvester Strautmann.

Helpfully, UFO No More has shared several fashion notes on the gala. Princess Charlene glittered in a silver-gray gown from Elie Saab with a Grecian-inspired design and a cape detail on one shoulder.

Her major jewelry accessory was a pair of diamond earrings, which have a design that could be read as floral or, given the event, celestial.

Charlene also wore her engagement ring, a pear-shaped diamond ring from Repossi, for the ball. She usually wears just this ring on her left hand for gala occasions.

Princess Caroline definitely got the sparkling memo, wearing a black dress with silver sequins and a silver sequin blazer-style jacket, both from Chanel.

Her big, bold pink and purple earrings have been in her collection for many years, and it’s thought that they’re JAR pieces. I’m extremely intrigued by the diamond clips she affixed to the neckline of her dress. She also added a diamond tennis bracelet on her left wrist to the ensemble.

Caroline’s daughter, Princess Alexandra, wore a slinky blue Prada dress with a silky trench-style jacket for the ball, paired with blue and pink statement earrings.

And Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi, always one of the most reliable jewelry-wearers of the family, paired a Dior gown with jewels from Suarez.

Here’s a closer look at the earrings and bracelet that Beatrice wore with the embroidered dress. The pieces are set with yellow and white diamonds.
