Last week, the Japanese imperial family gathered in Tokyo to celebrate the Emperor’s birthday, with plenty of classic brooches, earrings, and pearls worn for the occasion.

Emperor Naruhito celebrated his 66th birthday at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on February 23. He was joined by several family members as he received well-wishes from the public during a balcony appearance. Standing alongside him were his wife, Empress Masako, and their daughter, Princess Aiko, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, with Princess Kako and Prince Hisahito.

Empress Masako wore a dress in a shade of golden buttercream for the balcony appearance. The fabric had a damask pattern and a glowing sheen.

The Empress echoed the warm tones of her dress with her choice of jewels, wearing a strand of creamy pearls with a yellow gold and diamond ribbon brooch, plus a matching pair of earrings with pearl drops.

Princess Aiko also chose a yellow ensemble for her father’s birthday celebration, wearing a moire silk dress with ruffle design details. She also accessorized with a pearl necklace, a modern gold and pearl flower brooch, and pearl drop earrings.

The ladies of the crown princely family opted for blue for the birthday balcony appearance. Crown Princess Kiko wore a sky blue dress with bell sleeves and a woven detail at the waist.

Fittingly, her jewelry was cool toned: two strands of bright white pearls, paired with a diamond and pearl bar brooch and diamond and pearl drop earrings.

Princess Kako of Akishino, standing her between her cousin, Princess Aiko, and her brother, Prince Hisahito, wore a dress and floral headpiece in an eye-catching shade of royal blue.

She took a slightly different path with her daytime jewelry, wearing pearl drop earrings with a diamond bow brooch and a choker necklace that also appears to be set with diamonds.
