The official welcome ceremony for King Charles III and Queen Camilla was held at the White House this morning, with Camilla wearing one of the grand diamonds she sported during their coronation three years ago.

The King and Queen arrived at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday morning to begin the second day of their American state visit. The day will also include the King’s address to a joint session of Congress and a state dinner in the evening. Rain fell throughout the official welcome ceremony, which gave us a glimpse of one of the most famous royal accessories of all: a clear plastic umbrella.

For the welcome ceremony, Queen Camilla wore a pale spring green coat and dress with a matching hat and ivory accessories.

She added several jewelry touches, including her favorite diamond and pearl earrings and the Cullinan V Brooch, a masterpiece of jewelry design that was originally worn by Queen Mary and later became a favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The heart-shaped brooch is set with the 18.8-carat Cullinan V Diamond, one of the nine stones cut from the enormous stone mined in South Africa in 1905 and given to King Edward VII two years later. Queen Mary supervised the setting of the diamond in its brooch surround. When she was crowned in May 2023, Camilla wore three of the Cullinans in Queen Mary’s Crown, with the Cullinan V placed where the Koh-i-Noor was originally affixed.

Camilla has worn the piece as a standalone brooch several times in recent years. Above, the diamond glitters on her coat during a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2024.

Last June, she also wore the brooch with a dove-gray Dior ensemble on the first day of the races at Royal Ascot.

Here’s one more look at the brooch shining on Camilla’s coat dress at the White House this morning. I’ll be back here later today to cover the jewels she selects for tonight’s state dinner. See you then.
