Before we fully move on from the jewels of last week’s Belgian state visit to Norway, let’s have a look at two sparkling sapphire appearances from Queen Mathilde during days two and three of the trip.

On the second evening of their state visit to Norway, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians hosted a return concert for their hosts at the National Museum in Oslo. Before the concert, Philippe and Mathilde were joined by Queen Sonja for a tour of the museum.

They saw iconic pieces of Norwegian artwork during the tour, including Edvard Munch’s famous 1893 work The Scream. Queen Mathilde is pictured here viewing the painting.

For the tour and the concert that followed, Mathilde wore a gorgeous Christian Dior evening gown, made of midnight blue velvet with sequin detailing at the neck and shoulders.

She accessorized with a pair of sapphire and diamond pendant earrings. The design of the earrings suggests that they are antiques, perhaps dating from the Art Deco period.

Mathilde previously wore the gown and the earrings during the state visit to France in the autumn of 2024. This photograph, taken during a state dinner at the Élysée Palace in Paris, shows the earring detail with greater clarity.

Queen Sonja was also in a black-tie appropriate ensemble for the evening, wearing a black top and trousers with pearls and her signature stack of gold bangles.

On the third day of the visit, the King and Queen were joined by Crown Prince Haakon for a visit to Stavanger, where they learned about petroleum at a local museum, visited a military facility, and enjoyed a luncheon at the town’s concert hall.

Mathilde wore blue again for the daytime program on Thursday, pairing a Natan dress and cape with a matching pillbox-style headband from Fabienne Delvigne. She continued the blue theme through to her earrings, wearing her gorgeous diamond and cabochon sapphire pendant earrings.

These earrings, which feature larger diamonds and polished sapphire cabochon drops, made their debut last autumn, when Mathilde began wearing them for a series of engagements, including a welcome ceremony during the Italian state visit to Belgium.

She also memorably loaned them to her daughter, Princess Elisabeth, for the abdication and inauguration ceremonies in neighboring Luxembourg in October.

Here’s one more look at the earrings as worn by Mathilde in Stavanger on Thursday. So delightful to see two major diamond and sapphire earring moments from the non-banquet moments of a state visit. To the best of my knowledge, no provenance information about either pair has yet been shared or discovered. Which ones are your favorites?
