Queen Camilla Wears a Crown to the Braemar Gathering in Scotland

One of the first big annual British royal events of autumn took place this weekend, as King Charles III and Queen Camilla watched the Highland games at the Braemar Gathering.

Members of the British royal family have been attending the Games during the annual Braemar Gathering for more than a century. Queen Victoria was known to attend the gathering while in residence at nearby Balmoral Castle, and Queen Elizabeth II was a fixture at the games for decades. As monarch, King Charles III is now Chieftain of the event, which is held at the Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, named for King Edward VII’s eldest daughter, Princess Louise, and her husband, Alexander Duff, the 1st Duke of Fife. The man pictured on the left in this photograph is their great-grandson, David Carnegie, the 4th Duke of Fife.

Tartan abounds at the Games, and both Charles and Camilla wore examples as part of their attire for the day. The King wore a kilt of the King Charles III Tartan, which was registered for his personal use in 2023. Queen Camilla wore a green and red ensemble for the day, including a red pleated tartan skirt. She wore the same outfit earlier this year for the opening of Scotland’s Parliament.

With the outfit, Camilla wore familiar jewels: her favorite diamond and pearl drop earrings, her engagement ring and wedding ring, her gold pinky ring, and a brooch shaped like a Tudor crown.

Camilla has been wearing the brooch since the early months of 2023, shortly after her husband’s accession to the throne. Above, she wears the jewel on a cream-colored coat for a visit to Brick Lane in London.

A few months later, in July 2023, she brought the brooch to Scotland, wearing it for a visit to Selkirk during Holyrood Week. On that occasion, the ruby, emerald, and sapphire stones in the crown’s base sparkled against her light blue jacket.

She’s continued to wear the brooch occasionally in the years since. Its diamonds sparkled brightly against her dark jacket during a reception to celebrate the BBC’s 500 Words writing competition at Buckingham Palace in February 2025.

Here’s one more picture of Camilla wearing the brooch at this weekend’s Games. I think it’s an extremely interesting choice for this event, where we usually see more literal Scottish brooch references. What do all of you think?
