This week, the King and Queen of Denmark embarked on a state visit to the country they consider their second home: Australia. In Canberra, Queen Mary dazzled in modern Danish jewels for a state banquet.

King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark were the guests of honor at a state banquet at Government House in Canberra on Sunday evening, hosted by Australia’s Governor General, Sam Mostyn. King Frederik delivered sentimental remarks during the dinner, noting, “Once upon a time, Denmark perhaps did not resonate widely in Australia. Then something changed. In 2004, your Mary and I were married, and with that, Denmark once again had a Crown Princess. From that moment on, everyone ‘down under’ knew of the Nordic country ‘up over.'”
He added, “For me, Australia has held a very special place in my heart ever since I ‘slipped in’ to that bar and lost it in a conversation that has never ended. Mary, you had the courage to leave your beloved home and build a new one with me as far away as one can possibly go. For that, I will be forever grateful.”

For the dinner, Queen Mary was elegant in a Grecian-inspired evening gown from the Danish designer Jesper Høvring. The soft green gown features a beaded bodice and a long, dramatic beaded sleeve.

We previously saw Mary wear the dress in Amman for the banquet following the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa of Jordan in June 2023. On that occasion, she wore her Edwardian Tiara and its matching earrings with the dress.

This time around, Mary went tiara-less, opting instead to wear pieces of modern jewelry from one of her favorite Danish brands, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen.

Mary echoed the floral embroidery on her gown with her earrings, wearing the brand’s Winter Frost earrings, which are made of yellow gold and set with diamonds. She also added pale briolette gemstone drops for the occasion.

In her hair, Mary wore a yellow gold and diamond leaf brooch from the brand. It’s been in her collection for the better part of a decade.

Mary finished off the look with rings on both hands, a diamond tennis bracelet on her left wrist, and an interesting gold bracelet with a square plaque design on her right.

Before I go today, a reminder of what’s coming up for paid subscribers at Hidden Gems tomorrow: a deep-dive into the rather wild week when Sarah Ferguson’s wedding diamonds went missing at an American airport, thanks to an error by her assistant, Jane Andrews. (Jane is the subject of the new ITV/Britbox series The Lady.) See you then!
