It’s a stunner of a Tiara Tuesday, everyone: Queen Camilla has arrived for the annual Diplomatic Reception wearing an incredible emerald and diamond tiara from the Greville bequest!

The King and Queen hosted the annual Diplomatic Reception in Windsor on Tuesday evening, with the Prince of Wales joining them. (Princess Catherine was not present, but she is expected to attend the Royal Variety Performance tomorrow night.) Tonight marks the first time that the reception has been held at Windsor Castle since 2001.

For the reception, King Charles and Prince William both wore the Windsor uniform, while Queen Camilla wore an embroidered white evening gown with the Garter sash and star and the King’s Royal Family Order.

It was the tiara that she chose, though, that was jaw-dropping: it’s the Greville Emerald Kokshnik!

The emerald and diamond tiara was made for Dame Margaret Greville, a society hostess who became a good friend of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, by Boucheron after the end of World War I. Inspired by the kokoshnik-style tiaras popularized by the Romanovs, the jewel features an enormous cabochon emerald centerpiece. Mrs. Greville bequeathed it to the Queen Mother in 1942, but neither she nor Queen Elizabeth II ever wore it in public.

Instead, the first Windsor to be photographed wearing the jewel was Princess Eugenie, who borrowed it from her grandmother to wear at her wedding to Jack Brooksbank in Windsor in the autumn of 2018. The tiara was later displayed with her wedding gown at Windsor Castle.

Now, Queen Camilla becomes just the second British royal lady to wear the tiara in public. It comes as a big surprise to me: I expected her first emerald tiara moment to feature the Vladimir Tiara!

Camilla paired the tiara with a selection of diamond pieces, including the earrings from her pear-shaped diamond demi-parure and the Van Cleef & Arpels serpent necklace that she inherited from her grandmother. She also secured her order sash with Queen Victoria’s Diamond Bar Brooch, and one of the Queen Mother’s all-diamond Cartier Art Deco bracelets on each wrist.
This surprise article takes the place of our usual Wednesday morning feature. I’ll see you all back here later tomorrow to dish about the jewels worn by the Princess of Wales at the Royal Variety Performance!
