This week in Belgium, Queen Mathilde highlighted the importance of mental health care for older people—and wore a lovely pair of earrings while doing so.

On Tuesday, Queen Mathilde of the Belgians arrived at De Vijvers, a residential care center in the Gentbrugge municipality of Ghent. The center offers homes for couples and single people who can no longer live independently.

Queen Mathilde was joined by Carina Van Cauter, the governor of East Flanders, and Hafsa El-Bazioui, alderwoman of the city of Ghent, during the visit, which highlighted a new campaign from Project Te Gek. The Belgian court described the campaign as an initiative that “focuses on mental health issues among those over 65 and aims to break the taboos that sometimes surround this issue.”

For the care center visit, Mathilde wore a tailored trouser suit in a creamy shade of white, paired with houndstooth-tweed shoes and a pair of floral statement earrings from her jewelry archive.

Here’s a closer look at the earrings, which come from the Italian brand Muchinskiy Jewelry. The handcrafted earrings are made of gold-plated silver and enamel. They retail on the company’s website for €230.

The earrings have been in Mathilde’s jewelry box for the better part of a year. One of her earliest appearances in the floral drops came in November 2024, when she paired them with a royal blue suit for a visit to an elementary school.

Here’s one more look at the way Mathilde styled the earring for this week’s appearance in Gentbrugge. This time around, the earrings were part of a coordinated monochrome ivory look. (I have to admit, though, I like the way they stood out against that blue jacket!)

Speaking of bright blue, we also got a good look on Tuesday at Queen Mathilde’s fabulous ring, which many believe is set with a blue-purple tanzanite in a slim halo of diamonds. Mathilde has been wearing the ring for several years. It’s thought to be part of a wardrobe of rings given to her by her husband, King Philippe, to celebrate their engagement and milestone wedding anniversaries. This one began popping up on Mathilde’s hand in the months and years after their 20th wedding anniversary in 2019.
