This weekend, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands celebrates her 55th birthday. Ahead of the celebration, she made two glittering appearances this week in a pair of earrings set with her glorious green birthstone, the magnificent emerald.

On Tuesday, Queen Máxima made a visit to Stichting AAP (Animal Advocacy and Protection), where she opened a new building to care for mammals. The animal welfare organization is dedicated to the rescue of exotic animals in need and the promotion of legislature in Europe to protect them.

For the visit, Máxima wore a grassy green jacket and skirt from Natan with a coordinating green hat. She continued the green theme with her jewelry accessories, wearing pear-shaped diamond and emerald cluster studs from her personal collection.

The earrings are the top portion of a larger pair of emerald and diamond earrings that have been in her jewelry box for twenty years. The bottom pendants from the earrings can also be worn separately as a pair of studs. Above, Máxima wears the full setting of the earrings in Suriname last year.

On Tuesday, Máxima also wore bracelets on both wrists, including this lovely diamond bangle on her right wrist, and her wedding and engagement rings.

The earrings made another appearance on Wednesday, when Queen Máxima traveled to Arnhem for the opening of the State of Fashion Biennial, an international forum exploring ways that the textile and fashion industries can make societal change.

For the opening, Máxima wore an ensemble with echoes of Bianca Jagger’s famous wedding suit: a white jacket and matching trousers, paired with a big white Philip Treacy hat. Máxima’s suit, a Claes Iversen design, features a glittering green “paint splatter” on one shoulder, and Máxima paired it with a green clutch bag, shoes, and gloves.

The green emerald and white diamond earrings were a natural pairing with the outfit, as the green of the gems is a close match to the sparkling splatter on the shoulder of the jacket.

Máxima also added another spectacular emerald piece to the ensemble: a cocktail ring, worn on her right hand, set with an enormous emerald cabochon in a modern diamond setting. We also previously saw this during December’s visit to Suriname.

While Máxima celebrates her birthday over the weekend, there will be plenty of glitter for you to enjoy as well. Tomorrow, paid subscribers at Hidden Gems on Substack will receive the second installment in my London trip diary, featuring our visits to Windsor and Oxford. Here at The Court Jeweller, we’ll have a look at the jewels worn by the Princess of Wales on her second day in Italy. And on Sunday, my free weekly digest newsletter will be delivered to all subscribers as well. See you there!
