The Dutch state visit to Sweden kicked off this morning with the traditional welcome ceremonies, and there were plenty of jewels sparkling on all of the royal ladies present!

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands touched down in Stockholm for a three-day state visit on Tuesday. They were greeted at the airport by their longtime friends, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden.

The four royals were joined by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden at the court stables of the Royal Palace in Stockholm ahead of a traditional carriage procession.

At the palace, the kings reviewed a military presentation while the queens greeted members of the public.
Inside the palace, official photographs were taken. The royals were joined by Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia (who wore diamond earrings) for the picture session.

There was also another member of the Bernadotte family present: Princess Estelle, Victoria and Daniel’s daughter, who will one day reign as Queen of Sweden. She’s King Willem-Alexander’s goddaughter, so she stood beside him for the official photograph. The Swedish and Dutch royals have a long history of godparenting: King Carl XVI Gustaf is the godson of the late Queen Juliana and Crown Princess Victoria is a goddaughter of Princess Beatrix. Crown Princess Victoria is also godmother to Princess Amalia, Willem-Alexander and Máxima’s eldest daughter.

Queen Máxima wore pieces from the Dutch royal collection of diamond and kunzite jewels for the start of the state visit, including the statement pendant earrings from the suite. The small blue and yellow pin on her dress is a miniature of the Order of the Polar Star. Interestingly, we know that she will be made a member of the Order of the Seraphim today, so we should see her wearing the insignia of that more senior order at tonight’s state banquet.

Máxima also wore the ring from the set, as well as the diamond and kunzite floral bangles on her right wrist. She added more bracelets as well, including her diamond wedding bracelet on her left wrist and her diamond family initial bracelet on her right. You’ll also spot an interesting gold bracelet with a small black-and-white portrait on her right wrist.

Queen Silvia wore a gold necklace and earrings with her forest green ensemble for the welcome ceremony, as well as a pair of charming bee brooches.

Crown Princess Victoria was elegant in a lovely shade of plum for the morning’s events, accessorized with a diamond floral brooch, a small horseshoe necklace, and a pair of pearl drop earrings.
We’ll be covering the jewels from this evening’s state banquet in a separate article that will be published sometime later today. It will technically be our Wednesday morning post, but I’m going to put it out early so you don’t have to wait that long for all the sparkle!
