Happy Prinsjesdag, everyone! The Dutch royal family was out and sparkling today for the opening of parliament in The Hague, with some special heirloom jewels included in their ensembles.
Queen Máxima arrived at the Royal Theatre in The Hague ahead of King Willem-Alexander’s speech to the throne on Tuesday wearing the event’s usual daytime formal dress code. It’s one of the more challenging sartorial codes for royal ladies, mixing evening gowns and jewelry with daytime hats and gloves. This year, Máxima paired a favorite cream-colored skirt with a black blouse, gloves, and headpiece for the event.
Máxima picked up the color of the skirt with her jewelry, wearing earrings made of large pearl and diamond cluster studs and pear-shaped pearl drops. She secured the sash of the Order of the Netherlands Lion with another special diamond and pearl jewel from the family vaults.
The brooch, which is shaped like a strawberry leaf, dates to the first half of the nineteenth century. It can also be worn with a pearl pendant, as demonstrated here by Princess Beatrix on her wedding day in 1966.
Princess Amalia loves a Grecian-inspired draped gown, and this year for Prinsjesdag, she wore one in a shade of olive green from a recent favorite designer. She also wore a coordinating headband and shoes.
Amalia also loves a big gold statement earring, and she wore a trendy oversized pair with a knot design motif to listen to her father’s speech.
The younger Dutch princesses, Alexia and Ariane, were both on hand for today’s ceremony as well. Per ModeKoninginMaxima, Alexia’s dress comes from Reiss, while Ariane’s is a Jan Taminiau piece.
Her accessories, including a modern pair of earrings and a slim tennis bracelet, coordinated with the dark green color of the dress. I’m almost certain that we’ve seen her wear the earrings on a past occasion.
Alexia also added one more little jewelry surprise to the back of her dress, securing her order sash with one of Queen Emma’s diamond stars.
Princess Ariane raided her mother’s closet for her ensemble for the day, wearing a dress, headpiece, and earrings that all come from Queen Máxima’s wardrobe. Her earrings, made of red enamel, have a scaly serpentine design.
The red Jan Taminiau gown and capelet have been in Máxima’s collection for several years. The ensemble made another notable appearance on Prinsjesdag in September 2019, when Máxima paired it with the earrings and brooch from the Mellerio Ruby Parure.
The King’s brother and sister-in-law, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, were on hand for the Prinsjesdag celebrations as well. Laurentien wore a dark green dress with a shirtwaist design, which set off the vibrant sash of the Order of the House of Orange. (Per UFO No More, it’s from Carolina Herrera.) She also wore an interesting headpiece made of woven fabric.
Laurentien loves a big, bold piece of jewelry, so it was no surprise to see her add green and gold statement earrings and a big green beaded bracelet to the ensemble. But there were also interesting, quieter pieces included: a ring set with a blue-green intaglio stone and a diamond star brooch from the Dutch royal collection. The brooch, which belonged to Queen Emma, is the same one she wore for Prinsjesdag last year.
