The King and Queen of the Netherlands traveled to Kenya to begin a state visit on Tuesday, and the first day of the trip brought us some gorgeous floral earrings and some even more spectacular heirloom sapphires.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were welcomed to Nairobi on Tuesday by President William Ruto and his wife, First Lady Rachel Ruto. For the welcome ceremony, Máxima wore a coral-hued ensemble from Natan that featured a built-in cape and feather detailing. Per ModeKoninginMaxima, the outfit was purchased as an option for King’s Day in 2023, but it wasn’t worn in public until yesterday’s appearance.

With the dramatic cape-dress, Máxima wore ruby and diamond bracelet, her ruby and diamond ring, and a spectacular pair of tulip-shaped earrings.

ModeKoninginMaxima also has the details on these wonderful jewels. They’re from the Spanish jewelry designer Luz Camino. The playful, elegant tulip shape is a natural fit for the Queen of the Netherlands.

On Tuesday evening, the presidential couple hosted a state dinner for their royal counterparts, with the men in black tie and the ladies in evening gowns and gala jewels. For this occasion, Máxima wore a Claes Iversen skirt that has been in her wardrobe for many years, paired with a royal blue blouse. The combination was previously worn on Prinsjesdag in September 2016.

Because the dinner was black tie, Máxima might have decided to go tiara-less, but delightfully, she packed a petite tiara in her luggage for the moment. This is the Dutch royal family’s Sapphire Necklace Tiara, which was made by combining sections from two different royal jewels. A sapphire necklace from Queen Juliana’s collection was placed on a tiara frame and supplemented with five lozenge-shaped sapphire and diamond ornaments that were originally part of Queen Wilhelmina’s massive sapphire wedding gift tiara. The figure-eight-shaped earrings that Máxima wore for the dinner also come from the same wedding gift tiara.

Máxima added even more sparkle at the waist of her skirt, wearing Queen Wilhelmina’s Sapphire Bow Brooch. She even added an extra sapphire and diamond cluster pendant to the bow for this occasion.

There were more bright blue gemstones, too. Máxima wore one of Queen Emma’s Sapphire Bracelets on her right wrist, and her own diamond and tanzanite ring winked up from her right hand during the dinner.
