Get excited, magpies: we’ve got yet another a brand-new event to discuss featuring royal jewels! On Wednesday, the Dutch royal family attended a concert in The Hague to celebrate Queen Maxima’s upcoming 50th birthday, and there were gala jewels galore to enjoy!
The birthday girl herself, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, wore diamond and emerald jewels with a gown created by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen. The jewels included both heirloom family pieces and jewelry from Maxima’s personal collection. The diamond and emerald necklace and the ring on her right hand both come from the Dutch Emerald Parure. The set was ordered in 1899 from Schürmann by Queen Emma of the Netherlands as a gift for her daughter, Queen Wilhelmina. The emeralds used in the creation of the parure were from the Dutch royal vaults.
The diamond and emerald earrings worn by Maxima for the concert come from her personal jewelry box. These earrings, which feature pear-shaped emeralds surrounded by diamonds as both a stud and a drop, are convertible. They can be worn with or without the pendant section. The lattice-style diamond and emerald bracelet on her right wrist is a royal heirloom, first worn by Queen Wilhelmina at the end of the nineteenth century.
The emerald and diamond bangle that Maxima wore on her left wrist also belongs to the royal family’s jewelry foundation. So does the intricate diamond and emerald butterfly brooch, which you can see in close-up detail here. Maxima wore the brooch, which was a gift from King Willem III to Queen Emma, as a hair ornament. You’ll also spot her wedding and engagement rings on her left hand in this image.
Princess Beatrix sparkled at the concert in pieces from her personal collection of diamond and sapphire jewels, including earrings, a necklace, two bracelets, and a ring. She also wore her diamond cluster engagement ring on her right hand.
The Princess of Orange once again proved that she’s ready to start wearing more and more significant jewels for important events. These modern statement earrings belong to Queen Maxima, who has worn them fairly often in recent years. (For example, you’ll spot them here during a 2019 visit to Germany.)
Amalia also wore a delicate necklace with a smiley-face charm, as well as the stacked bracelets we saw her wear recently on King’s Day.
Queen Maxima’s earrings did appear to give Princess Amalia a bit of a problem outside the theater. I think the princess’s mask got caught on the earrings. Thankfully, she had plenty of help in remedying the issue.
Princess Alexia kept her jewelry on the simpler side for the concert. She wore rings on both hands and a stack of casual bracelets. Her green dress, though, provided plenty of sparkle on its own.
The youngest member of the family, Princess Ariane, also kept her jewelry on the minimal side. She accessorized with a delicate necklace with small red beads.
