The Queen of Spain made a glittering appearance at an awards ceremony in Madrid last week, wearing special heirloom diamonds that belonged to her husband’s great-grandmother, Queen Ena.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain were on hand on July 2 for the presentation of the ABC journalism awards. Three prizes are presented annually: the Mariano de Cavia, Luca de Tena, and Mingote Awards for excellence in journalism.

For the black-tie ceremony, Queen Letizia wore a black taffeta dress from her wardrobe archive, made by the 2nd Skin Co. The Spanish brand was founded in 2006 by designers Juan Carlos Fernández and Antonio Burillo.

We’ve seen her wear the black dress for several prominent events in recent years, including the presentation of the Princess of Asturias Awards in October 2021.

She also wore the same dress in June 2022 for a gala dinner attended by NATO leaders at the Royal Palace in Madrid ahead of a forthcoming summit.

On all three occasions, Letizia accessorized with some of the most important diamond jewels available to her: the diamond earrings and bracelets from Queen Ena’s joyas de pasar collection. In her will, Ena stipulated that her best diamonds should remain with the family, passing down from generation to generation for the use of the woman who holds the title of Queen of Spain.

The large diamond cluster earrings were wedding presents to Ena from her husband, King Alfonso XIII, in 1906. The bequest also included a pair of matching diamond bracelets. Letizia wore just one of these with the dress for last Thursday’s awards ceremony, though she’s also worn both stacked together with this dress in the past.

Letizia finished off the look with her ever-present Coreterno ring, worn on the index finger of her left hand. Many have speculated that the romantic ring might have been a gift from King Felipe.
