Last night in Stockholm, the tiaras were out for a grand state banquet in honor of the President of Iceland, including a special heirloom tiara worn for the first time by Princess Madeleine.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden welcomed President Halla Tómasdóttir of Iceland and her husband, Björn Skúlason, to Stockholm for a state visit on Tuesday. The royals hosted a state banquet in honor of the presidential couple on Tuesday evening at the Royal Palace. The King and Queen were joined by Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, and Christopher O’Neill for the dinner.

Queen Silvia, who is soldiering on while recovering from foot surgery, sparkled in a vibrant pink evening gown and wrap for the dinner, paired with the insignia of Iceland’s Order of the Falcon and the King’s Royal Family Order.

Her jewels for the night were particularly spectacular: Queen Sofia’s Tiara, a nineteenth-century diamond sparkler packed with symbolism, and the necklace, large brooch, and earrings from the family’s Russian Pink Topaz Suite. That set of pink jewels originally belonged to Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, a daughter of Emperor Paul I of Russia. She was an ancestor of Queen Victoria of Sweden, who brought the topazes to Stockholm in 1923.

The large brooch from the suite is visible on Silvia’s right shoulder in this official picture released by the royal court.

For the state banquet, Crown Princess Victoria wore a Frida Jonsven gown (previously worn in Oslo for Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s 18th birthday gala) with her father’s Royal Family Order and the insignia of the Order of the Falcon.

The theme for the tiaras worn by the Swedish princesses on Tuesday evening was “Margaret of Connaught.” Crown Princess Victoria reached for her great-grandmother’s diamond and aquamarine kokoshnik, pairing it with classic diamond stud earrings.

But it was Princess Madeleine’s tiara choice that stole the show. She made her debut in another of Margaret of Connaught’s tiaras, wearing it with an electric pink gown that she previously wore for the Nobels in 2019. She also wore the Order of the Falcon and her father’s Royal Family Order.

The tiara she paired with the pink dress is Margaret of Connaught’s diamond and ruby tiara, which was a wedding gift from her uncle and aunt, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, in 1905. The jewel is convertible. It can be removed from its tiara frame and linked to a matching bracelet, forming a necklace, or stretched across the bodice of a gown as a corsage ornament.

Madeleine paired the Edwardian tiara with diamond earrings from the family vaults, a legacy from the Leuchtenberg family, and a modern diamond ring.
