Since her husband’s accession, Queen Mary of Denmark has proved to be an innovative custodian of the nation’s crown jewel collection. The third spot on my countdown of the best royal jewelry moments of 2025 goes to her debut in an unusual antique tiara from the vaults.

In March, King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark arrived in Helsinki for a state visit with the President of Finland. On the first day of the visit, they were the guests of honor at a state banquet at the Presidential Palace. For the occasion, Queen Mary wore a gown from her wardrobe archive paired with astonishing royal jewelry pieces that had never before been worn in front of photographers’ cameras.

The bandeau-style tiara that she wore is a slender gold diadem from the collection of Queen Caroline Amalie of Denmark, the granddaughter of King Christian VII and wife of King Christian VIII. The tiara, which dates to 1820, is set with eleven cameos acquired by Christian VIII and Caroline during one of their trips to Italy.

With the gold tiara, Mary also wore another fascinating piece from the family collection: a gold bracelet, also acquired in Italy, that is set with colorful gemstones. The piece was a gift from King Frederik VII to his first wife, Princess Vilhelmine Marie, during their royal engagement in 1828.

Mary finished off the look with a citrine brooch and earrings that belonged to Frederik VII’s third wife, Countess Danner. The jewels are usually displayed alongside the crown jewel collection at Rosenborg Slot. Each of Queen Mary’s gala appearances is exciting these days. You never know what treasures she’ll bring out of the vaults!
Tomorrow, I’ll reveal my top two royal jewelry moments of the year! Which appearances are you hoping to see at the top of the countdown?
