The Dutch royals joined in a milestone anniversary celebration in Amsterdam on Monday, with Queen Máxima in modern metallic jewels and Princess Amalia wearing borrowed earrings—and a vintage dress with family history!

On Monday, the city of Amsterdam celebrated its remarkable 750th anniversary. The settlement was first documented in the year 1275, when Floris V, the Count of Holland, granted a toll exemption to residents “at the dam in the Amstel.” King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and Princess Amalia were on hand for the celebrations, which wrapped up a year of commemorations. The royals attended a concert, and the King pressed a button at the conclusion of the event that set off an impressive display of lights and fireworks.

The weather was chilly and damp at the Museumplein during the event, so both Queen Máxima and Princess Amalia wrapped up in warm coats. Máxima’s dark red Valentino cape, per UFO No More, concealed a silk Natan jumpsuit underneath. Amalia wore a black Max Mara coat over a festive green dress (more on that in a minute).

With her dark red ensemble, Máxima wore a necklace of metal feathers that comes from Monies, paired with coordinating earrings from the German brand Hemmerle.

She also added antique diamond touches to the ensemble, wearing Queen Wilhelmina’s lovely diamond trellis bracelet, as well as the octagonal diamond ring made from part of Queen Juliana’s Dutch East Indies Bracelet. (You can see a good image of the ring in this earlier article.)

Amalia’s attire for the event, though, got most of the press attention on this occasion, and for good reason: she celebrated the historic moment by reaching into the family’s wardrobe archives for a dress worn by generations of Dutch royals.

The green and black Theresia Vreugdenhil dress, with its distinctive beaded bodice and feathered skirt, originally belonged to Amalia’s grandmother, Princess Beatrix. When she was Queen of the Netherlands, Beatrix wore the dress for a gala event during her 1981 state visit to neighboring Belgium.
On that occasion, Beatrix paired the dress with family diamonds, including Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara and Queen Wilhelmina’s Diamond Scroll Brooch. (Nearby, Queen Fabiola of Belgium wears the Wolfers Tiara and her pearl drop earrings, while Princess Paola, as she was then, wears Queen Elisabeth’s Art Deco Bandeau with one of her own diamond necklaces.)

In the spring of 2014, just a few weeks after she became Queen of the Netherlands, Máxima borrowed the festive green dress from her mother-in-law’s closet for the annual Liberation Day concert in Amsterdam.

Now, Amalia becomes the third member of the family to wear the dress. She paired the dress with a pair of earrings featuring black studs with diamond accents and long black pendants.

The earrings were also a loan. They’ve been in Queen Máxima’s jewelry box for almost a decade. Her most memorable appearance in the earrings to date came in October 2018, when she wore them with a pink and black dress during the state visit to Britain.
