Last week, the princely family of Liechtenstein gathered in Vaduz for the principality’s National Day celebrations, just days before the upcoming wedding of the daughter of the Hereditary Prince and Princess.

Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein led the family party at the National Day celebrations, held on the grounds of Vaduz Castle. Alois has been the country’s regent for nearly twenty years, following the retirement of his father, Prince Hans-Adam II, in 2004. Also present for the celebrations were Alois’s uncles, Prince Philipp and Prince Nikolaus, and three of Alois and Sophie’s children, Prince Wenzel, Princess Marie Caroline, and Prince Georg. Marie Caroline’s fiancé, Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer, was in attendance as well.

For the festivities, Hereditary Princess Sophie wore a day dress with a blue and white print, paired with gold and diamond jewels.

Here’s a closer look at her diamond floral stud earrings, her gold necklaces, and her gold bracelets and watch.

Princess Marie Caroline, who works in the fashion industry, opted for a trendy yellow day dress with a black floral pattern, paired with black shoes and modern earrings.

Here’s a closer look at her hoops, which feature a design that appears to feature gold and black enamel stripes.

The princely family announced in October 2024 that Princess Marie Caroline was engaged to marry Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer. Leopoldo was born in Venezuela and educated in Britain, attending Harrow, St. Andrews, and Cambridge. Both Leopoldo and Marie Caroline live in London, where he works in investment management. Their wedding is scheduled to take place at St. Florin’s Cathedral in Vaduz on August 30.

Princesses of Liechtenstein traditionally wear tiaras on their wedding day, and I think Marie Caroline has three realistic options to choose from, should she decide to wear a family heirloom. Perhaps the grandest of the three is the Habsburg Fringe Tiara, which originally belonged to her great-great-grandmother, Archduchess Elisabeth Amalie of Austria. In 1967, Marie Caroline’s grandmother, Countess Marie Aglaë of Wchinitz and Tettau, wore the tiara to marry Prince Hans-Adam II in Vaduz. More recently, it was worn by a cousin, Princess Maria Anunciata, for her wedding in Vienna in 2021.

The other major tiara in the Liechtenstein vaults is the Kinsky Honeysuckle Tiara. Made for a Liechtenstein princess who married into the Kinsky aristocratic family in the nineteenth century, the tiara was acquired by Prince Hans-Adam II for Princess Marie. Today, it’s primarily worn by Hereditary Princess Sophie, but it’s also been worn by several family brides, including Marie Caroline’s aunts, Princess Angela and Princess Tatjana, and her cousin, Princess Marie-Astrid, who wore it on her wedding day in Italy in 2021.

When Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie were married in 1993, she wore another tiara from her own family’s collection. Sophie was born a Bavarian princess, the great-great-granddaughter of the last King of Bavaria. Her mother, Princess Elisabeth, was a Swedish countess before her marriage. The tiara that Sophie wore for her wedding is Elisabeth’s own tiara of diamond daisies, which comes from the Douglas family. Several of Sophie’s sisters also wore the tiara on their wedding days. Perhaps Marie Caroline might want to participate in that family tradition?
