Scandinavian Royal Sparkle to Mark an Important Swedish-Danish Anniversary

Last week, the anniversary of an important link between Sweden and Denmark was celebrated by both royal families, with Queen Silvia and Queen Mary wearing elegant jewels for the occasion.

On Tuesday, the Kings and Queens of Sweden and Denmark gathered in Malmö to kick off the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Öresund Bridge. During the celebration, the royals crossed the bridge and continued the festivities in Denmark. The royals also dedicated a pair of new binoculars in each country overlooking the bridge.

The bridge carries both trains and cars over the Öresund Strait between Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmö in Sweden. Construction on the project, which includes both a bridge and a tunnel, began in 1995 and was completed on July 1, 2000.

The bridge was officially opened on July 1, 2000, in a joint ceremony by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The bridge provided a physical link between the two countries, but the Swedish and Danish royal families have long been interconnected. Queen Margrethe and King Carl Gustaf are first cousins. On Tuesday, the Swedish King was joined by his first cousin once removed, King Frederik X of Denmark, to mark the anniversary of the bridge’s opening.

Queen Silvia and Queen Mary both opted for jackets, trousers, and sunglasses for the daytime event. UFO No More tells us that Silvia’s tweed jacket comes from Zara, and Mary’s coral trouser suit is from the brand Scanlan Theodore.

Silvia accessorized with several long pearl necklaces, a pair of pearl, diamond, and ruby earrings, and a gorgeous bejeweled butterfly brooch. The brooch appears to be set with diamonds, rubies, and a large cabochon emerald.

If the brooch looks familiar, that’s because Silvia recently wore it during a visit to Britain, during which King Carl Gustaf and King Charles planted an oak tree from Solliden on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The tree was the Swedish royal couple’s coronation gift to King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Queen Mary opted for a favorite pair of earrings for the bridge celebration: diamond and pearl drops from Dulong Fine Jewelry. The custom earrings have been in her jewelry box for the better part of a decade.
