Three generations of the Norwegian royal family wore tiaras on Monday to celebrate the visiting President of France during a gala dinner at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

King Harald V and Queen Sonja rolled out the red carpet for President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron on Monday, hosting a white-tie gala dinner for the presidential couple at the Royal Palace in Oslo. The Macrons are currently on an official visit to Norway.

For the dinner, Queen Sonja sparkled from head to toe in a gown festooned with purple sequins and jewels dripping in diamonds. She wore the wide red sash of the French Legion of Honor with her dress, as well as her husband’s Royal Family Order. Beside her, President Macron wears the insignia of Norway’s Order of St. Olav.

With her gala gown, Queen Sonja wore a tiara that has become a relatively rare sighting in recent years: the diamond tiara that belonged to Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway. It was a legacy from Josefina’s grandmother and namesake, Empress Joséphine of France—making it a perfect tiara to wear to welcome a French president to Norway. The tiara has hopped around royal jewelry boxes in Scandinavia, spending time with Queen Lovisa of Denmark and her son, Prince Gustav, before ending up in Norway with Crown Princess Märtha and Queen Sonja.

With the tiara, Sonja wore several more pieces of important diamond jewelry from the Norwegian family collection. Her earrings were once worn as a pendants on a necklace by Queen Maud of Norway’s mother, Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom. Her diamond and pearl scroll brooch was also one of Queen Maud’s jewelry pieces. The jewel was given to Maud in 1896 as a wedding present by the Drapers’ Company, one of the livery companies in the City of London. She also wore diamond necklaces and a diamond bracelet.

Crown Prince Haakon, wearing the red sash of the Order of St. Olav and the badge of the Legion of Honor, arrived at the gala dinner with his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and their daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

With her white evening gown, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore the sash of the Order of St. Olav with several additional decorations, including the King’s Royal Family Order and the badge of the Legion of Honor. Her jewels included her wedding tiara, the Diamond Daisy Bandeau, as well as a pair of diamond earrings with red pendants and a diamond bracelet. Her diamond and pearl brooch, previously worn by Princess Ragnhild, comes from the collection of Queen Maud.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra wore a scarlet red evening gown with the Order of St. Olav and her grandfather’s Royal Family Order for the banquet, paired with a tiara that now belongs to her: the diamond and pearl circle tiara from the collection of the King’s grandmother, Princess Ingeborg. The tiara later belonged to the King’s sister, Princess Ragnhild, who passed away in 2012. Her children decided to give the tiara to Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who has been wearing it regularly since she turned 18 in 2022.
With the tiara, Princess Ingrid Alexandra wore diamond and pearl earrings that belonged to her great-grandmother, Crown Princess Märtha, as well as a diamond riviere that belonged to Queen Maud and a bracelet set with Queen Maud’s badge of the Royal Order of Victoria & Albert. That bangle was a confirmation present from her great-aunt, Princess Astrid, in 2019.

Speaking of Princess Astrid: she was there at the gala dinner, too! She wore a light blue evening gown paired with diamond and turquoise jewels, including the circlet tiara that belonged to her great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom.
