I wanted to highlight one more special jewelry moment from the recent Academy Awards ceremony, this time featuring a pair of earrings connected to a famous mother-and-daughter actress pair: pearls worn by both Isabella Rossellini and her mother, Ingrid Bergman.

Isabella Rossellini, who was nominated this year for the Best Supporting Actress award for her work in Conclave, arrived on the red carpet at the Oscars wearing a glamorous blue velvet gown. The dress was a tribute to her late friend and former partner, the filmmaker David Lynch. She appeared in his 1986 film Blue Velvet, and the dress is a callback to that season of her life. Rossellini wore a similar blue velvet gown to the Academy Awards in 1987, when she attended as a presenter and Lynch was nominated in the Best Director category for the film.

With the meaningful dress, Rossellini wore some meaningful jewelry. Her diamond and pearl drop earrings have a particularly special resonance: they belonged to her mother, the renowned actress Ingrid Bergman. Rossellini wears them frequently, including several appearances during this year’s award season.

The earrings are the same ones that Bergman wore in 1975 when she won her third Academy Award, the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Murder on the Orient Express. She had previously won the Best Actress Oscars for Gaslight and Anastasia. The earrings, made by Bulgari, were a gift from Rossellini’s father, the director Roberto Rossellini. Bergman also wore the earrings in the 1954 film Journey to Italy, which was written and directed by Rossellini.

For this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, Rossellini also wore additional pieces of jewelry on loan from Bulgari. Above is a sketch of the necklace that she wore for the occasion: the brand’s Etrurian Shapes Necklace, which is set with diamonds and sapphires. The brooch and ring that she wore for the event are also Bulgari pieces.

Rossellini handed back the Bulgari jewels after the ceremony, changing into a three-row pearl necklace for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Beverly Hills to coordinate with her mother’s diamond and pearl earrings.
