Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, who will one day succeed her grandfather and her father as Queen of Norway, celebrated her 18th birthday in January. She made visits to Norway’s parliament, supreme court, and prime minister, but the glittering birthday celebrations were postponed until June because of the pandemic.

Norwegian princesses traditionally receive their first tiaras on their eighteenth birthdays, and in April, we discovered which tiara had been presented to Ingrid Alexandra. She received the Boucheron Pearl Circle Tiara as a birthday present. The antique tiara originally belonged to her great-great-grandmother, Princess Ingeborg of Sweden.

Ingrid Alexandra’s birthday gala was held at the Royal Palace in Oslo in June. She wore Princess Ingeborg’s tiara for the occasion, along with other jewels, including Princess Ragnhild’s diamond bracelet, the brooch from the family’s amethyst parure, and pearl earrings gifted to her by members of the Belgian and Dutch royal families.

And the Belgian and Dutch royals were also among the friends and family from across Europe who came to the gala to celebrate Princess Ingrid Alexandra. Significantly, the heiresses to both the Belgian and Dutch thrones are contemporaries of Ingrid Alexandra, and both of them also made their tiara debuts at this royal gala.

The Duchess of Brabant, heir to the throne of Belgium, wore a gorgeous antique diamond tiara for the gala. We learned shortly afterward that the tiara was purchased at auction by the royal family specifically for Elisabeth’s use, as an eighteenth birthday gift for her in 2019.

The Princess of Orange, the heir to the Dutch throne, also wore a tiara for the first time in public at the Norwegian birthday gala. Rather than a new (or newly acquired) piece, she selected a familiar jewel from the Dutch royal collection: the Dutch Star Tiara. Meaningfully, this is the same tiara that her mother, Queen Máxima, wore on her wedding day in 2002.
