On Friday, King Haakon VIII opened Norway’s parliament for the first time in his reign, and his daughter, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, wore modest pearl and diamond jewelry for the occasion.

King Haakon VIII and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra were busy on Friday with constitutional duties. Here, they’re pictured attending a Council of State meeting, with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre sitting to the King’s right.

The royal court is still in mourning for the late King Harald V, so Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra wore a black trouser suit and headband for the council meeting. Her accessories for the event included small pearl stud earrings and a ring set with a matching white pearl.

The day’s program also included the ceremonial opening of Norway’s parliament, the Storting, in Oslo. Here, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra arrives at the parliament building.

King Haakon VIII delivered remarks before the throne inside the plenary chamber. He stood in the same spot, before Oscar Wergeland’s enormous historical painting depicting the constitutional assembly at Eisvold in 1814, when he took his oath just a few weeks ago.

Queen Mette-Marit was not in attendance at the Storting opening because she is dealing with a respiratory illness, so Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra stood at her father’s side during the ceremony. She again wore black—a jacket and skirt, plus a headpiece adorned with bows and a coordinating bag, gloves, and shoes—for the occasion.

The Crown Princess’s jewels included two sets of earrings: silver-toned double hoops and tiny pearl studs. She also wore the same pearl ring that she wore to the Council of State meeting.

Her necklace, though, has gotten the most attention, and for good reason. The piece, which features tiny white pearls, culminates in a diamond ribbon from which a small pearl pendant is suspended. The ribbon is clearly an antique piece. The motif was a popular one during the era when Queen Maud was married and later became Norway’s queen consort.

The Queen, then Crown Princess Mette-Marit, memorably wore the necklace during the family’s state visit to Britain in October 2005. She’s pictured here wearing the jewel during the welcome ceremony at Horse Guards Parade in London.
