This week, the King and Queen of Spain joined in a constitutional celebration in Madrid, with Queen Letizia wearing a favorite pair of diamond and aquamarine earrings.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain headed to the Congress of Deputies in Madrid on Tuesday to attend the “Our Longest Constitution” event. The event celebrates the 47th anniversary of the 1978 constitution, which is now the longest-enduring constitutional document in Spanish history. During the event, King Felipe addressed the assembly, noting, “The path traveled by this constitutional Spain has been brilliant, and the future will be no less so, provided we continue to write it together.”

For the constitution event, Queen Letizia wore a navy blue skirt suit made from a nubby tweed fabric, paired with navy shoes and a matching handbag.

She kept her accessories extremely simple, wearing just a pair of hoop earrings made of white gold and set with diamonds and aquamarines.

The earrings come from Bulgari. They’ve been in Letizia’s jewelry box for many years, and they can also be worn with optional pear-shaped aquamarine drops. She wears the full earrings in this photograph, taken at the Cervantes Award presentation in April 2016.

Interestingly, Letizia wore the hoop portion of the earring for another important constitution-related event: the ceremony during which the Princess of Asturias pledged an oath of allegiance to the constitution in October 2023.

And speaking of Leonor, she’s worn the earrings, too. Here, she wears the full setting of the earrings, complete with the aquamarine drops, for the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony in October 2023.

Queen Letizia’s only other jewelry accessory for Tuesday’s constitution celebration was her ever-present Coreterno ring, worn on the index finger of her left hand. It’s too bad—this jacket is practically crying out for a brooch, and wearing one linked to Spanish royal history would have been especially appropriate on this occasion. After all, she wore an important brooch with the very same suit back in February!

Before I go today, a quick reminder that a new edition of Hidden Gems will be arriving in subscribers’ inboxes on Saturday. This week’s topic: the fascinating amethyst, turquoise, and diamond jewels made by Cartier for the Duchess of Windsor. I’ll see you there!
