King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain were among the notable attendees at the University of Alcalá de Henares on Friday for the awarding of the Cervantes Prize. They were joined by several other dignitaries, including Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
The prestigious prize is a lifetime achievement award that honors the work of a Spanish-language writer. This year’s recipient is Cristina Peri Rossi, a Uruguayan novelist, poet, and journalist who resides in Barcelona. Peri Rossi was not able to attend the ceremony because of health problems. The award was collected on her behalf by Cecilia Roth, an Argentine actress who also lives in Spain.
