Royals are just like us: most of their recent events have been canceled. But before she headed to Windsor Castle for an extended stay, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom held one more private audience — and wore a fantastic heirloom brooch.

The Queen met with the outgoing and incoming Commanding Officers of the HMS Queen Elizabeth, Commodore Steven Moorhouse and Captain Angus Essenhigh, at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

With her royal blue dress, the Queen wore a brooch that she inherited from her grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1953.

Queen Mary’s Russian Brooch takes its name from its origins. The brooch was Mary’s wedding gift from Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia in 1893. The empress, who was born a Danish princess, was an aunt of Mary’s new husband, the future King George V of the United Kingdom.

Here’s a closer look at the brooch. Its geometric design surrounds a pair of impressive gemstones: a diamond and a sugarloaf sapphire.

The Queen loves to wear the brooch on a royal blue background, just as she did for Wednesday’s audience. It will likely be a good bit before we see a royal brooch out in the wild once more, so I’m grateful that we got one more bejeweled treat last week!
