Jewel History: Beautiful Women and Beautiful Jewels (1918)

Princess Catherine Radziwill, ca. 1910

"Beautiful Women and Beautiful Jewels"
(originally appeared in the Evening Public Ledger, 2 March 1918)

By the Princess Radziwill [1] -- The Russian court was always famous in the old days, when it existed, for the number of pretty women at its balls and festivities, as well as for the quantity of magnificent jewels which they wore. At present, owing to the events which have taken place during the last four years [2], a great many of these historical parures have been sold or otherwise disposed of, and it might be interesting to recall the memories of the splendid jewels and lovely women who made the festivity at the Winter Palace so brilliant.

Jewel History: State Banquet for the Afghan Visitors (1928)

King George V and King Amanullah at the start of the 1928 state visit

"State Banquet for the Afghan Visitors"
(originally appeared in the Guardian, 14 March 1928)

The whole range of state rooms at Buckingham Palace were last night converted into floral arbours for the state banquet in honor of the King and Queen of Afghanistan [1]. There were flowers everywhere. In the banqueting hall itself rhododendrons, azaleas, and similar plants were massed against the walls; spring flowers were mingled with them, and daffodils, ranging from palest yellow to deepest gold, formed the table decoration. No setting could have been more fitting for the brilliant scene that was staged. The uniforms of the Afghans, the glittering orders of the men, the blaze of jewels worn by the women, the gorgeous medieval uniforms of the Yeomen of the Guard, could have asked no better background.

Please enjoy the content that I've scheduled for all of you, and thanks in advance for maintaining the usual positive, friendly tone in the comment section.

Thanks a bunch, everybody!
