Jewel History: The Duke and Duchess in Vancouver (1901)

George and Mary arrive in Vancouver during the 1901 royal tour

"The Duke's Thanks"
(originally appeared in the Vancouver Daily World on 1 Oct 1901)

Early this morning, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York [1] passed through the Lions' Gateway on their way to Victoria. There were very few people down on the waterfront to see the Empress of India [2] slowly pass through the Narrows with her royal company on board. When Vancouver and the mariners of England of the last century who came here under the charter of an earlier George [3] made their voyage along the fjords and bays of mainland and island, they never anticipated that an Heir Apparent, bearing the name of him they loved to serve, would ever go over part of the sea that their sailing ships groved [4].

In Memoriam: Countess Gunnila Bernadotte af Wisborg

Count Carl Johan and Countess Gunnila Bernadotte af Wisborg (Photo: MAJA SUSLIN/AFP/GettyImages)

On Tuesday, the Swedish court announced the death of Countess Gunnila Bernadotte af Wisborg. Gunnila was the widow of Count Carl Johan Bernadotte, who was the youngest son of King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden and Princess Margaret of Connaught. By marriage, Gunnila was an aunt to (among others) King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.

Gunnila was the daughter of two Swedish aristocrats, Count Nils Wachtmeister af Johannishus and Baroness Märta de Geer af Leufsta. Her first husband was Carl-Herman Bussler; after his death, she married Count Carl Johan, who was also a widower. Carl Johan died in 2012.

King Carl XVI Gustaf released the following statement: "Gunnila Bernadotte was married to my uncle, Count Carl Johan. She was a very much valued, close, and faithful friend to our family, and her passing is a great loss." Today, to remember Gunnila, I've got a few bejeweled pictures of her to share.

The Top Ten: Meander Tiaras

Princess Andrew's Meander Tiara (Photo: Chris Jackson PT/Getty Images)

The Top Ten: Meander Tiaras

When tiaras became popular in the early years of the nineteenth century, neoclassical designs that referenced ancient Greece and Rome were all the rage. It's no surprise, then, that many tiaras use one Greek design motif in particular: the meander, a horizontal pattern of interlocking spirals. The design is sometimes also called a "Greek key," and many think that it's meant to resemble the twists and turns of a labyrinth. Others think the meander is meant to symbolize unity -- which is appropriate, as no fewer than seven of the tiaras we're featuring today have been worn as bridal diadems.

There are still many meander tiaras in royal vaults today, and today, I'm counting down my top ten favorites. Let us know what your top ten list would be in the comments below! (And thanks to reader Alex for suggesting this post!)
